Hypertension and diagnostic criteria by measurement method. Hypertension can silently raise the risk of stroke and heart disease. The table compares office, 24-hour ambulatory, and home blood pressure thresholds. Who should consider hypertension management: people with blood pressure at or above 140/90 mmHg, elevated blood pressure with diabetes, heart or kidney disease, abdominal obesity, family history, uncontrolled blood pressure on medication, or different home and clinic readings. Lifestyle modifications for hypertension include limiting salt and alcohol, regular exercise, weight management, and dietary adjustments. These changes can lower blood pressure as effectively as one medication.

Types of Hypertension Medication

The most commonly prescribed class in Korea. Preferred when kidney function is impaired or diabetes is present, it reduces albuminuria and slows chronic kidney disease progression.

Why are there so many types of BP medication?

The 2022 Korean Society of Hypertension guidelines recommend choosing medications based on each patient's clinical profile and coexisting conditions. Because one drug lowers blood pressure by only about 9/5 mmHg on average, combining low doses of different medications can improve control while reducing side effects.

These medications lower blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels. They are effective when variant angina is present and may also help slow the progression of atherosclerosis.

The 2022 Korean Society of Hypertension guidelines recommend choosing medications based on each patient's clinical profile and coexisting conditions. Combining low doses of different medications can improve control while reducing side effects.

These medications reduce heart rate by blocking sympathetic nervous system activity. They can be especially effective when tension or stress causes blood pressure to rise.

Why are there so many types of BP medication?

Medication is selected according to each patient's clinical profile and coexisting conditions. Low-dose combinations can provide better blood pressure control with fewer side effects.

Diuretics lower blood pressure by helping the body remove excess sodium and water. They often play an essential role in combination therapy.

Diagnostic Process

Hypertension care involves more than lowering numbers—it also considers its impact on the heart, blood vessels, and kidneys.
At The Heart Internal Medicine Clinic, a cardiologist evaluates the causes and effects of elevated blood pressure to select appropriate treatment.
A structured treatment plan aims for long-term blood pressure control and complication prevention.

FAQs

To help answer common questions in advance,
we provide key information before your visit.

Do I have to take BP medication for life?
For most patients, hypertension is managed rather than cured.
BP often rises again once medication is stopped. However, significant lifestyle
improvements may allow dosage reduction or discontinuation in some cases.
Never stop medication on your own always consult your doctor.
My BP goes up when I'm nervous — is that a concern?
A temporary BP rise under stress is normal, but if it happens repeatedly
or your resting heart rate is elevated, sympathetic overactivity may be involved.
The sympathetic nervous system and RAAS can create a vicious cycle of rising BP,
and sleep apnea may also contribute. White-coat hypertension (high only at the clinic)
or masked hypertension (high only at home) may also be factors.
A 24-hour ambulatory BP test can accurately assess your real-world BP patterns.
What if hypertension is diagnosed at a young age?
When hypertension is found before age 40, it's important to evaluate
for secondary causes rather than attributing it solely to lifestyle.
Renal artery stenosis, primary aldosteronism, thyroid dysfunction,
and sleep apnea can all be hidden causes. If identified,
targeted treatment may normalize BP or reduce medication needs.
Which BP reading is used to diagnose hypertension?
Prehypertension (130–139/80–89 mmHg) measured in the office does
not typically require medication. However, without intervention
it can progress to hypertension, and if accompanied by diabetes, heart disease,
or kidney disease, target BP levels and treatment plans may differ.
Lifestyle changes and regular follow-up are most important at this stage.
Can I stop medication once my BP is normal?
No.
Normal BP may be the result of medication and lifestyle management working together.
Stopping medication on your own can cause BP to rise again and increase the risk
of complications. Always follow your doctor's guidance regarding medication.
